Why Is My House So Humid, Even With the AC Running?

It is a specific kind of uncomfortable: the thermostat says 72, the air conditioner runs, and the house still feels like a damp basement. On the upper Shore, surrounded by rivers and the Bay, indoor humidity is half the comfort battle. Here is why it happens and what actually fixes it.

How an AC dehumidifies, and why runtime matters

Your air conditioner removes moisture as a side effect of cooling: humid air crosses the cold indoor coil, water condenses on it like a cold glass in August, and drains away. The catch is that this only happens while the system runs. A system that blasts the temperature down in ten minutes and shuts off has barely started pulling water. Long, steady runtimes dry a house. Short, powerful bursts do not.

Cause 1: The system is oversized

This is the big one, and it is epidemic in fast-built developments. An oversized unit satisfies the thermostat quickly and quits before meaningful moisture removal happens, all day, every day. The house reads cool and feels clammy. The full fix is correctly sized equipment at replacement time; in the meantime, running slightly warmer setpoints extends cycles and helps somewhat.

Cause 2: Humid air is pouring in

The AC removes moisture from a house that outdoor air constantly refills through leaks: attic bypasses, crawlspace air, gaps around penetrations. Crawlspaces deserve special mention here, since bare-earth crawlspaces under Shore homes evaporate moisture up into the living space all summer. Ground vapor barriers, sealing, and in some homes crawlspace encapsulation attack the supply side of the humidity problem.

Cause 3: Low charge or a dirty coil

A refrigerant-starved or dirt-blanketed coil runs warmer than designed, which cuts moisture removal before it noticeably cuts cooling. If the humidity crept up over a season or two without any other change, the system itself deserves a checkup.

Cause 4: The fan is set to ON

A sneaky one. With the fan running continuously, the water sitting on the coil after each cooling cycle gets re-evaporated and blown back into the house instead of draining. Set the fan to AUTO in summer. It is a free fix that surprises people.

Cause 5: The house generates more than the system was sized for

Long showers without bath fans, unvented cooking, line-drying indoors, aquariums, and lots of plants all add water. Fans that vent outdoors, used every time, are the cheap answer.

When to add dedicated dehumidification

For some homes, especially with finished basements or encapsulated crawlspaces, a whole-home dehumidifier plumbed into the system is the right tool: it dries without overcooling and holds the house at a set humidity in shoulder seasons when the AC barely runs.
